Healthy Eating, Active Living (HEAL) in Schuyler is made up of agencies, businesses, and concerned community members within Schuyler County. We work together to help reduce the rate of obesity among people within our county.
Schuyler County is above the state average for the rate of overweight adults and children. Health data from the 2012 “County Health Rankings & Roadmaps” shows that 28% of adult residents in Schuyler County are overweight. This shows a 2% yearly increase in adult obesity statistics since 2010. These factors rank Schuyler County as 34 out of 62 in NY for Health Issues. Obesity is directly connected to a variety of short and long term health problems. Obesity increases healthcare and other costs leading to a shorter life span.
What is the goal of HEAL Schuyler? Our goal is to reduce the rate of adult obesity in Schuyler County to less than the NYS average of 25% (2012-2013). This will be done by the end of 2018 and will be measured by the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps.
HEAL Schuyler first started in 2011, which focused on Physical Activity and Nutrition. By 2012-2013, the group had organized a mission and a vision statement. The mission statement was “By January 2015, to reduce the rate of obesity in Schuyler county by 10% through promotion of healthy eating and active lifestyles.” The vision statement was, “HEAL Schuyler will accomplish its mission through increased awareness, motivation, community collaborations and facilitating environmental changes for families to promote healthy choices and lifestyles.” In 2013, the group came up with the name HEAL Schuyler Obesity Group and did an assessment of the stakeholders and the community. By the end of 2013, HEAL Schuyler mission and vision was incorporated into the 2013-2016 Community Health Improvement Plan and Community Service Plan, which gave HEAL Schuyler a 3 year work plan and additional support from the community.
