Schuyler County Public Health reports a local increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs).The most troubling is the increase in syphilis cases, so far in 2017. “In 2016, there was one reported case of syphilis, which has been our trend for years. In the first 3 months of 2017, we have already had 4 reported cases” Marcia Kasprzyk, Director of Schuyler County Public Health reports. Syphilis can be fatal if not treated. The current cases seem to be among men who have sex with men, but anyone who is sexually active no matter your age or gender is at risk. STIs spread through unprotected oral, anal and vaginal sex. People with STIs do not always have visible symptoms. If you are sexually active, the best way to protect yourself from STIs is to use a condom correctly every time you have sex. Research shows that nearly 20 million new sexually transmitted infections occur every year in this country, 50% of which are among young people aged 15–24. We recommend that you get tested and know your status. Free and confidential testing and treatment sites are available, for a listing of where you can get tested, please call Schuyler County Public Health 535-8140 or visit our website www.schuylercounty/publichealth.
