With recent flooding, Schuyler County Public Health wants to provide the community with tips to help them and their family stay safe and healthy. Flooding can damage and contaminate wells. If your water comes from a well, make sure it is safe to use and drink after flooding.

“When a private water well has been flooded, the water in it may be contaminated with germs that can make people and pets sick”, Schuyler County Public Health Director Marica Kasprzyk warns.

She offered the following tips:

  • Clean and check your well for damage. Repair, regrade, and flush the well if needed.
  • Make sure your well water was not contaminated with germs or chemicals by testing the water. Schuyler County’s Watershed Protection Agency can help you get your water tested after flooding to make sure it is safe. Call them at 607-535-6868.
  • For more information on restoring and testing your private well after a flood visit: https://www.health.ny.gov/publications/6562/index.htm.
